Maternal Mental Health
Maternal Mental Health
Maternal mental health disorders typically occur in what is called the perinatal period. The perinatal period occurs from up to one year before to up to two years postpartum. Mental health symptoms occurring during and after fertility struggles may also be included in maternal mental health treatment, as well as traumatic births and infant loss.
Perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) can be developed by people of any age, race, culture, and income level. Psychotherapy can help with any of the following maternal mental health issues:
- Feeling overwhelmed and hopeless throughout the day
- Fatigue and difficulty sleeping
- Panic, anxiety or stress
- Recurring negative or intrusive thoughts and emotions
- Feeling sad or depressed
- Feeling irritable or angry
- Difficulty with appetite
- Trouble with concentrating
- Flashbacks of traumatic event
